Five people have been arrested after Melbourne Cup celebrations took a wild turn in Sydney’s business district.

Four people were injured in two alleged incidents at licensed venues on Wednesday night, following a day of extravagant festivities.

In two other separate incidents, a restaurant manager was assaulted and a man was struck with a baseball bat. 

Police were called to Merivale’s Establishment Bar on George Street at about 10pm following reports of an assault.

A man, 33, and a woman, 28, were allegedly speaking with three people before a fight broke out.

A 38-year-old man was allegedly punched in the face before falling to the ground unconscious.

He was taken the St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition. 

A 26-year-old woman was also allegedly struck in the face with a plastic cup. 

The alleged culprits were arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station where they remain in custody. 

In a separate incident, a man, 38, allegedly punched a woman, 23, in the face while police were making inquiries. 

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for facial injuries. 

The man was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 5 December 2018. 

In another separate incident two men were arrested after allegedly assaulting a restaurant manager at China Lane on Angel Place.

Another man was assaulted about 500m down the road on Pitt Street. 

Police were called at about 4.45pm to the incident and arrested two men at about 4.55pm. 

The two men, 43 and 34, were charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company and intimidating police. 

The older man was additionally charged with two counts of assault.

They have been granted police bail to appear in court next month.

Police have also appealed for witnesses following an alleged assault with a baseball bat overnight.

At about 12.50am on Wednesday, a group of four men were walking along O’Sullivan Road in Bellevue Hill, Sydney’s east.

One of the men, 28, was walking on the road when he narrowly escaped being hit by a white hatchback.

The driver reversed a short distance after the pedestrian shouted at the vehicle. 

A man wielding a baseball bat got out of the front seat of the vehicle and struck the 28-year-old passenger in the head.

A 22-year-old man was struck in the arm when he attempted to intervene.  

The alleged attacker returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.

The two men were treated at St Vincent’s Hospital but there injuries are not serious.
