Cheryl explains she needed a break from the spotlight ‘for her sanity’ and claims she ‘felt jaded’

Cheryl has explained why she has been absent from the music scene for the past four years, revealing she had ‘just had enough’.

Speaking on fellow singer Jessie Ware’s podcast Table Manners, the former Girls Aloud star, 35, said of her hiatus: ‘I needed it for my sanity. I honestly didn’t know how much I needed it until I did it. I’d just had enough.’

She added: ‘I wasn’t inspired, I was jaded. It felt like a negative space I was living in and then you get to the point where it’s like “What is the point?” I could be doing something I hate doing and feel the same way, so why am I like putting myself through this?’

‘I like a balance. I like peace and harmony in my life.’

These revelations come days before her new single Love Made Me Do It is released, which fans have speculated is a bitter way to hit back at her ex, Liam Payne.

The songstress teased the track on Instagram on Tuesday morning, and the lyrics have raised eyebrows.

‘Oh my god, I’m such a sucker, I fall in love with every f***er,’ she sings, as revealed by an official press release for the track.

However, Cheryl has slammed the idea that she is targeting her One Direction star ex via her new music.

Speaking about what to expect from her new album, Cheryl said: ‘All the music and all the songs that I’ve got ready were done way before we split – none of them are about anybody. I wasn’t sat writing a love poem to anyone or about anybody.

‘It’s something that anyone who’s been in love will be able to relate to in some way or another. It’s catchy and it’s fun. It’s not about one specific person or relationship, it’s more about me being the lover of love that I am. I just love love!’

Hmm: While Cheryl said the song is about her past lovers, rather than any one person, it's fair to say Liam has been her most significant romance - the singer on X Factor on Sunday

She concluded: ‘I’m excited. I’m comfortable and confident in the music, but I’m just happy to be doing it again. I’m not nervous about it, I don’t feel pressure, I just feel excited.’

She shared a non-lyric based clip to Instagram on Tuesday, simply writing, ‘#LoveMadeMeDoIt’, alongside a heart emoji, including the release date, ‘09.11.2018’.

The track sees Cheryl collaborate once again with her former-Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts, who co-wrote it.

Cheryl also released new artwork and showcasing where she is at in her life right now, she sings : ‘Love made me do it… and I’d do it again.’

Meanwhile, Cheryl, is said to be taking to The X Factor stage on Sunday, November 18, to debut her comeback single.

The pop star put her music career on ice following the release of her fourth album, Only Human, in 2014.

Cheryl last appeared on the show’s stage as a performer during a 2014 episode, while she was also a judge on the series.

She sang her second single from Only Human – I Don’t Care.

The last single she released to date was also called Only Human, released in early 2015, and peaking at a disappointing number 70 on the UK singles chart; this was the only one of her nine solo singles not to go silver, gold or platinum.

While she returned to The X Factor in 2015 as a judge, she has not yet performed on the show since then.

Her comeback track will be the lead single from her new fifth studio album.

She is set to perform at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Coca-Cola on Sunday December 9, the day after Liam and Rita’s performances on the Saturday 8.

A source told The Sun, however, that, ‘Cheryl has the 18th November penciled in [to appear on The X Factor. Obviously schedules can change but right now, everything is set for that date.

‘Cheryl will be pulling out all of the stops to make sure that this is one of her most talked-about performances to date.’

Cheryl is said to have been offered a slot on Strictly Come Dancing on the same weekend, but the former Girls Aloud star reportedly opted for her old stomping ground on ITV.

She was a judge on The X Factor from 2008–2010 before switching to The X Factor USA in 2011.

This was famously short-lived, with Simon Cowell replacing her a few weeks in with Nicole Scherzinger.

After a couple of years of acrimony, Simon coaxed her back for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

She left again and, in the meantime, began dating Liam – having a baby son together – before returning to the series again last year as Simon’s guest judge for the Judges’ Houses round.

Her appearance next weekend sees Cheryl follow Liam – who she split from in July – who took to the stage on Sunday to sing his own new track Polaroid.

Liam was reportedly meant to duet with Cheryl on the track, but replaced her with Lennon Stella, who fans insisted is Cheryl’s ‘double’.

The One Direction star sent viewers into meltdown when he took to the stage with 19-year-old Lennon on the series’ latest results show last Sunday, a mere two weeks ahead of Cheryl’s own performance.

On Sunday, Cheryl wiped her Instagram page clean, ahead of her return to the charts.

Breaking her social media silence the next day, the songstress shared a series of butterfly emojis and one glancing eye emoji on Twitter as she teased her return to fans.

In a chat with the Daily Star her collaborator, producer Naughty Boy, said the 3 Words songstress had written songs from the heart and shown a different side of herself for the new album.

He said: ‘It is 100% personal and it’s about time people got to know the real Cheryl. The lyrics really mean something to her – sometimes you have to put a bit of heart for people to see that there is a real struggle.’

The singer has also drawn reference to ex-husbands Ashley Cole and Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini, it is claimed.
